Marlene Dietrich stars as nightclub singer Lola Lola, whose unrestrained sexuality was a revelation to moviegoers of the early 1930s. Emil Jannings delivers a towering performance as the sexually repressed professor of a boys school who is fatefully seduced by Lola Lola and dragged down a path of personal degradation.

Photographer Steve McCurry, whose work from India is being exhibited at the Rubin, cites The Blue Angel as one of the most influential films on his life and work.

“Superbly designed and lit, The Blue Angel is a modern tragedy and an erotic masterpiece” —Philip French, The Guardian (2013)
