A family living on less than a dollar a day in rural Nepal wins the globalization jackpot: a charity scholarship for their daughter to go to school in the capital. She promises to return to free them from poverty, but when she does not, the family realizes that they have paid a heavy price.

About the Speaker

Julie Bridgham is a Sundance Institute Documentary Fellow and the director and producer of the award-winning documentary The Sari Soldiers, for which she received the 2008 Nestor Almendros Prize for courage and commitment in human rights filmmaking. She has lived in Nepal for extended periods, where she has produced and directed numerous documentaries, including several documentaries for the United Nations and the Nepalese Youth Opportunity Foundation.
