How to Get without Getting Got:

Us//Ours & Institutions, Part 2

Friday, May 18, 2018
5:00 PM–6:00 PM

By Us For Us (BUFU) is a decentralized multimedia documentary project focusing on the discourse of Black and Asian cultural and political relationships. The founders of this project are a collective of queer, femme, Black, and East Asian artists and organizers who emphasize building solidarity, de-centering whiteness, and resurfacing our deeply interconnected and complicated histories.

In this second event of a two-part conversation co-presented with Eyebeam, join BUFU and other guests who build alternative spaces by holding space to share resources, build collectively, and ideate. Consider the relations between marginalized bodies, consumption//creation, visibility as a trap, and our institutional overlords.

To scam? To divest? To wage within? What are our options and their impact?

Presented in partnership with Eyebeam.

About BUFU

The five co-founders of this project (Jazmin Jones, Jiun Kwon, Tsige Tafesse, Katherine Tom, and Suhyun Choi) started BUFU in September 2015. Since then, they have expanded their work through collaborating with multiple partner organizations, collectives, and individuals. They are current artists in residence at Eyebeam (2018) and have presented programs and workshops at the Brooklyn Museum of Art (2016), New Museum of Contemporary Art, and more.

About Eyebeam

Founded in 1998, Eyebeam was the very first critical space of its kind: a place to think creatively about how technology was transforming our society. Eyebeam has given time, space, and money to artists whose work has shaped our world— including the first-ever social sharing tool ReBlog, electronic toys startup littleBits, and the pioneering net art of Cory Arcangel. Eyebeam aims to ensure artists become central in the invention and design of our shared future. Everything is guided by a focus on Eyebeam’s core values: openness, invention, and justice.
