Spiral Music

Wednesday, May 18, 2016
6:00 PM–9:00 PM

Spiral Music presents acoustic music every Wednesday evening at the base of the Museum’s spiral staircase. Artists who specialize in music from the Himalayas and South Asia are invited to forge a connection between their music and the art in the galleries.

About the Musicians

Sameer Gupta is known as one of the few percussionists simultaneously representing the traditions of American jazz on drum set and Indian classical music on tabla. By combining traditional and modern improvisational styles drawing from his Indian heritage and American roots, Gupta has already established himself as an original musical voice in jazz, world, and fusion music. From bebop to avant-garde jazz, and European classical percussion to northern Indian classical tabla, Gupta continues to compose and perform music from a true multicultural perspective that bridges several continents

Michael Gam is an upright and electric bassist/composer living in New York. As a versatile musician skilled in many styles of music, Gam has performed with cutting edge jazz musicians like Ambrose Akinmusire and Tigran Hamasyan, top classical virtuoso Hillary Hahn, and Carnatic master percussionists Subash Chandran and Ganesh Kumar. Gam has also been studying Indian classical music since 2010 and is a budding sarod performer of the Maihar gharana.
