Waiting Rooms

A Game of Perplexing Emotions

Saturday, April 23, 2016

“The goal of the game you discover through play.”
– Eric Zimmerman

Architect Nathalie Pozzi and game designer Eric Zimmerman will prototype their newest physical game installation, Waiting Rooms. This work-in-progress explores the themes of bureaucracy, immigration, economic inequality, and the systematization of contemporary life. The Rubin Museum will be transformed into a series of absurdist waiting rooms governed by a topsy-turvy social economy through which players progress in sometimes collaborative and sometimes competitive ways.

Psychologist Ben Michaelis will join the game designers and evaluate the emotions experienced by participants at the evening’s conclusion.

About the Speakers

Nathalie Pozzi is an Italian architect and the principal of Nakworks, an interdisciplinary design studio based in New York exploring the critical intersection of space, material, and culture.

Eric Zimmerman is a game designer and arts professor at the NYU Game Center. He designs games on and off the computer that invent new forms of play.

Over the last several years Pozzi and Zimmerman have designed a series of large-scale game installations that are part architectural sculpture and part interactive performance. Their collaborations have appeared at events and exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, as well as in Paris, Dublin, Moscow, and Los Angeles.

Ben Michaelis, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist, popular speaker and blogger for Huffington Post and Psychology Today, and the author of Your Next Big Thing: Ten Small Steps to Get Moving and Get Happy . A graduate of Columbia College and NYU, Ben brings his passion for creativity to his treatment approach, following three essential elements for helping patients get unstuck and moving forward: Play, Purpose, and Work.
