What is the format of Family Sundays?

Family Sundays are held every Sunday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM in-person at the Rubin Museum of Art. The program takes place in the Mandala Lab, located on the third floor. Pre-registration is required for either the 1:00 PM or 2:00 PM time slots. The program is free for you and your family, and each ticket comes with free access to the Museum galleries. Each month we explore a new theme, with an art-making activity centered around that theme. A Museum educator will do a brief demonstration of the project, teach the art-making techniques, and let you explore ways to make the project your own.

What are the goals of Family Sundays?

Our goal is for you and your family to have a unique, fun experience that takes you on an exploration of Himalayan art, ideas, and maybe even yourselves! Family Sundays feature art-marking activities based on our exhibitions, offering new ways to engage with the Museum on a regular basis.

Will there still be a Family Exhibition Tour?

Now that Family Sundays take place in the Mandala Lab on the third floor of the Museum, we encourage you to explore the surrounding galleries during your visit and ask us questions during the workshop. This replaces the Family Exhibition Tour.

top

How long is the art activity?

Family Sundays are scheduled from 1:00 to 3:00 PM, but the art activity is designed to be done in as little as five minutes or as long as thirty. It is up to you as the artist!

top

How do the activities differ each month?

Each month we present a new theme that connects to a current exhibition. The themes and art activities stay the same from week to week within that month.

top

Do both the child and adult need to participate in all Family Sundays activities?

We strongly believe that children learn best with the presence and support of a significant adult. Your enthusiasm and participation will encourage your child to be fully engaged in their Museum experience. All children are required to be accompanied by a supervising adult.

top

Is there an age limit for Family Sundays?

While our suggested age for the art activities is 3 and older, there’s no true age limit for the adults in your family. We recommend ages 3 through 12 for the younger members of your group. We ask that only adults with accompanying kids attend the program—no adult groups. If you are an educator interested in learning more about our Family Sundays or other programs, please email education@rubinmuseum.org.

What are your COVID-19 safety protocols?

Along with following the Museum’s safety protocols, we support social distancing by setting up our tables 8 feet apart, provide pre-cleaned art-making tools for each family unit, and supply plenty of sanitizer and sanitizing wipes for visitors.
