Anjana Roy + Polash Gomes

Spiral Music presents acoustic music every Wednesday evening at the base of the Museum’s spiral staircase. This week Anjana Roy (sitar) and Polash Gomes (tabla) are invited to forge a connection between their music and the art in the galleries.


About the Musicians

Anjana Roy (sitar) comes from Delhi, India, where she had her early initiation in music under Shri Rebati Ranjan Debnath, her father and guru, who was a disciple of Ustad Allauddin Khan of Miher. Now based in New York, Anjana has taught sitar music at the Shikshayatan Cultural Center in Queens and has performed at the Queens Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn Public Library, International House, the Indian Consulate, and in many private concerts. Currently Roy is studying under the tutelage of Shri Parimal M. Sadaphal from Delhi, who is a senior disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar and one of the foremost sitarists of India

Polash Gomes was born in a Bengali Roman Catholic family in Kolkata, India. He follows the line of the distinguished Lucknow baj and is a disciple of Dr. Mrinal Pal of Lucknow Gharana. He has also studied tabla under Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri. In 1991 he founded Rageshree Music Institute, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination of Indian music in the West. Gomes has performed with great masters such as Pandit Krishna Bhatt, Pandit Ramesh Mishra, Pandit Subrato Roy Chouwdhury, and Amit Chatterjee.
