Rubin Museum of Art and ArtTable present: Collecting the Future: A panel discussion on Contemporary Indian Art and the Marketplace With collector Nitin Bhayana, gallerist and collector Arani Bose, and Rubin Museum curator Beth Citron The exhibition Modernist Art from India: The Body Unbound focuses on representations of the figure and body in modernist art from India between the nation’s independence in 1947 and the mid 1980s. This panel discussion will consider issues and trends within the recently booming international market for modern and contemporary Indian art. Limited capacity. $18 ($16.20 Rubin Museum members) A collector since age 15, Nitin Bhayana has worked with Anthony d’Offay Gallery after graduating from the London School of Economics. Nitin is one of India’s most active collectors. He is the youngest individual to be appointed on the advisory board of the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. He has lectured extensively on the art market, infrastructure, and collecting at various institutions in India, such as the Indian School of Business (ISB) Hyderabad, National Gallery of Modern Art Mumbai, Jindal Art Centre, Delhi, Indian Art Summit 2009, India Habitat Centre and at Wolfsburg, Zurich. In addition, he has published monographs on leading contemporary artists, ‘Bindu – Space and Time in Raza’s Vision’ by Dr. Geeti Sen and ‘Words and Lines’ by F.N. Souza. Works from his family collection have been exhibited at numerous museums the world over, including the Tate Modern, Centre Georges Pompidou, Reina Sofia, Ecole Des Baux Arts, and Art Institute of Chicago, among others. He is currently a director in Bhayana Group. Born in Calcutta, Arani Bose spent his childhood between India and the US. He studied philosophy, religion and chemistry at Stanford University, and completed his medical training in neurology at Yale University. He is the Founder and Chairman of Penumbra Inc., a medical device company focusing on novel treatments for stroke patients. In 1994, Dr. Bose co-founded Bose Pacia, the first gallery in the West specializing in contemporary art from South Asia. Having held over 50 exhibitions, Bose Pacia has strived to contextualize work from South Asia and to foster the discourse between these artists and the international art community. Beth Citron is an Assistant Curator at the Rubin Museum of Art, where she has organized a series of exhibitions on Modernist Art from India. She is also developing forthcoming exhibitions of photography by India’s first female photojournalist Homai Vyarawalla, and on New York-based artist Lisa Ross. She completed a Ph.D. on Contemporary Art in Bombay, 1965-1995, in the History of Art Department at the University of Pennsylvania in 2009, and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Art History Department at New York University, where she teaches a course on “Contemporary South Asian Art.” She has contributed to Artforum, ArtIndia, and other publications, and has an article forthcoming from ArtJournal on “Bhupen Khakhar’s ‘Pop’ in India, 1970-72.”
