Woody Allen felt that he had been too “nice” to the characters in the end of Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), so he wrote this film as a response to those feelings.
The role of “Prof. Louis Levy,” subject of Cliff Stern’s documentary in this film, is played by non-actor friend of Woody Allen’s, Martin Bergmann, clinical professor of psychology in New York University’s post-doctoral program.
Originally, Alan Alda was only supposed to appear in the opening party scene. Woody Allen expanded his part after he asked Alda to improvise and decided to write Alda’s part as they went along.

Patrick McGrath is the author of eight novels and two story collections. Three of his novels have been made into films, including Spider, which was directed by David Cronenberg, and for which McGrath wrote the screenplay. He’s been on the jury at the Rome Film Festivaland alsothe Edinburgh Film Festival, and has had one other script produced, an adaptation of his first novel, The Grotesque.His work has been published in more than two dozen countries and in Italy his novel Asylum has sold more than half a million copies.
