Bogarde later recalled his face burning while shooting the film’s final scenes where his skin had been painted deathly white. When he later found the tube of cream that had been used, it was labeled “Keep away from eyes and skin.”
Author Thomas Mann witnessed the outbreak of the Venetian cholera epidemic in May 1911, which became a motif of moral decay in the novella on which the film is based.
Björn Andrésen is dubbed, since the Swedish actor was playing a Polish character.
