– In an attempt to cut production costs and also and another layer of realism to the film, John Boorman cast the local residents as the hill people.
– James Dickey, who wrote both the novel and the screenplay adaptation, has a cameo appearance at the end of the film as the sheriff.
– Donald Sutherland was originally asked to play a part in the film but declined as he objected to the violence.
