Due to the current spike in COVID-19, Family Sundays have been suspended for all Sundays in February 2022. We hope to see you back for Family Sundays soon!

Create your own Damaru drum at home using this step-by-step guide, or check out our Art from Home resource page for more art activities.

Damaru Drumbeats:

What makes music sound happy, sad, or scary? What types of sounds might you connect with anger? Inspired by the Mandala Lab’s gong orchestras in the East qQuadrant, this month practice being aware of your emotions by making your own instrument! Create your own handheld Damaru-inspired drum, an instrument used for meditation practice in Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism. How might you describe the sound of your drum? How does that sound make you feel?

Mandala Lab and Family Sundays are made possible with lead support from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation, Rasika and Girish Reddy, Shelley and Donald Rubin, and the Tiger Baron Foundation.

Major support is provided by Agnes Gund, New York Life Insurance Company*, Con Edison, Anne and Albert Chao, Anne E. Delaney, Noah P. Dorsky, the Estate of Lisina M. Hoch, the Prospect Hill Foundation, Namita and Arun Saraf, Eileen Caulfield Schwab, Taipei Cultural Center in New York, and New York Life.

Public funds are provided by New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
