Ganesh Chaturthi: Celebrating Ganesha’s Birthday

Himalayan Heritage Meet-Up

Wednesday, September 6, 2017
6:30 PM–8:30 PM

The elephant-headed Hindu deity Lord Ganesha is beloved for his ability to remove obstacles for his followers. Across the Himalayas, different communities worship him in diverse and enchanting ways.

Celebrate his birthday, a holiday known as Ganesh Chaturthi, at the Rubin with India Home’s seniors, who will present songs, chants, and rhythmic dance from India and Nepal. Join in the singing and observe a demonstration of the “visargan” or water immersion ritual that is central to Ganesh Chaturthi in some cultures. The program also includes a special guided tour of the exhibition The World Is Sound by Tashi Chodron, Assistant Manager, Himalayan Cultural Programs & Partnerships.

India Home is a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the needs of the Indian and larger South Asian senior citizen immigrant community. Started in 2007 by a group of healthcare professionals, India Home provides social, psychological, recreational, and spiritual services in a culturally sensitive environment.
