Marriage in Mumbai: Shifting Power Dynamics

Wednesday, February 13, 2019
7:00 PM–8:30 PM

What is the role of arranged marriage in an era of increasing opportunity and choice? Is it an outdated tradition, or a refuge of security in an ever-changing world? Journalist, author, and filmmaker Elizabeth Flock spent a decade in India exploring the changing expectations in traditional and modern romance and marriage. Her first book, The Heart Is a Shifting Sea, chronicles the journeys of three couples whose relationships illuminate these sweeping cultural shifts in dramatic ways. Analyzing these marital dynamics with Flock is psychologist and relationship expert Vijayeta Sinh. Through her practice she helps clients navigate cultural and social issues as they relate to work, career, marriage, and parenthood.

A book signing featuring Elizabeth Flock and her book The Heart is a Shifting Sea will take place after the talk.

Presented with the India Center
