Refugee Kids: One Small School Takes on the World (directed by Renée Silverman and Peter Miller) follows six weeks at a New York City summer program for newly arrived students, who are granted asylum in the U.S. from the world’s most intractable conflicts raging in Tibet and Burma, West Africa, Iraq and Egypt among others.
The film offers a child’s view of crises torn from the headlines by interweaving animations inspired by the kids’ own artwork with intimate, verité scenes at school and home. Their heartbreaking, inspiring stories of resilience and courage put a human face on global politics and the debate on America’s role as a safe haven.
The film will be followed by a post-screening discussion with the filmmaker and Q&A with the audience.
