The Activist: Zainab Salbi + Dean Haycock

The humanitarian Zainab Salbi has fought to highlight violence perpetrated against women the world over. Withneuroscientist and writer Dean Haycock she attempts to understand the cause of violent behavior in society, and the resilience it takes to overcome it.
Zainab Salbi is an Iraqi-American humanitarian, entrepreneur, author, filmmaker, and media commentator who has dedicated herself to international women’s rights and freedom. At the age of 23, she founded Women for Women International—a grassroots humanitarian and development organization dedicated to serving women survivors of wars, which, under 18 years of Salbi’s leadership, has helped more than 370,000 in eight conflict areas, and raised more than 100 million dollars in aid and loans. Salbi has been listed as one of the Top 100 Most Influential Women by Harper’s Bazaar, Newsweek, The Guardian, and Fast Company. Salbi is the author of three books, including the national bestseller Between Two Worlds: Escape from Tyranny: Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam, and is currently working on a documentary about the women involved in the Arab Revolutions.
Dean A. Haycock is a science and medical writer living in New York. He earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Brown University and a fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health to study at The Rockefeller University. His research has been published in Brain Research and in the journals of Neurochemistry, Biological Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics among others.
