The Photographer: Frédéric Lagrange + John J. Sakon

The Wakhan Corridor in northeastern Afghanistan is one of the most breathtaking and unforgiving places on the planet. For photographer Lagrange it was also a far cry from making portfolios for Martha Stewart. But following his obsession, he spent five weeks filming the narrow land and its people. Here with NYU’s John Sakon, he compares notes about the sort of endurance required to exist in such a forbidding climate.

About the Speakers

Dr. John J. Sakon graduated with a B.S. in physics from the College of William and Mary in 2005 and a Ph.D. in physics from North Carolina State University in 2010. His work included the first detection of the folding state of an individual protein in a live cell using a technique called single molecule FRET. He started as a postdoctoral fellow in Wendy Suzuki’s lab at New York University in 2011, where he uses electrophysiological techniques to study how our brain separates similar memories and encodes contextual events in time.
