Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan descends from a distinguished line of elders who reigned supreme in the world of music. He is the direct descendant of the great Abdul Karim Khan and Abdul Wahid Khan, the founders of the famous Kirana lineage. His father, the great sarangi player, Shakoor Khan was the grand nephew of Bande Ali, Beenkar, while Mehboob Baksh Khan and Aajiz Pia were Mashkoor’s great grandfathers.
Mashkoor was initiated into music and trained by his father for fifteen years and secured a place in the world of music very early in life. After his father’s demise, he joined the ITC-Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata, as a scholar, to polish and hone his undiluted style of Kirana gayakee (singing). Now, as a Guru of both the Sangeet Research Academy, and the American Academy of Indian Classical Music, he nurtures numerous vocalists and scholars under his able wings. His recitals reveal great imagination and vocal agility. An erudite musician, he possesses a keen understanding of the characteristic styles of Kirana gayakee, emphasizing the numerous permutations of musical phrases, known as “Khandmeru.”
With his celebrated lineage, Mashkoor has inherited a veritable treasure trove of “bandishes” (compositions) and an insight into rare ragas that few musicians can boast of. A true heir of his renowned forefathers, Mashkoor still continues to collect rare compositions with passion.
He has recently appeared at such prestigious events as the Harballav Sangeet, Sammelan, Jalandhar, Saptak Festival, Ahmedabad , ITC SRA Sangeet Sammelan,Kolkata, Delhi Classical Music festival, Delhi, Jashn-e-Khusrau Festival, Delhi, Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Kalakendra Conference, Delhi, Kirana Gharana, Gayaki Itihaas, Lalit Kala Academy , Pune, All India Radio Sangeet Sammelan, Jaipur to name a few. In the past he has also performed in equally prestigious venues like Dover Lane Music Conference, Kolkata, Sawai Gandharva Sammelan, Pune, Sajan Milaap Sammelan, Mumbai, Swami Haridas Sammelan Festival, Mumbai, Apna Utsav, Delhi, Sangeet Natak Academy Thumri Festival, Commonwealth games presentations, Mysore among others. Outside of India, he was part of Kronos Quartet’s Carnegie Hall Celebration of Terry Riley in New York, and performed many times at The Rubin Museum of Art, New York, Raga Samay Festival, Philadelphia and many other venues over the years.
Mashkoor Ali Khan’s career is studded with numerous awards, like the Abhinav Kala, Sammelan (1993), Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Award (1994), Swaranjali Award (1997), Best Vocalist Award by the Bharatiya Sanskriti Samsad (1990) and the Ustad Niaz Ahmed Khan and Faiyyaz Ahmed Khan Memorial award (2004).
