The Rubin Museum of Art presents a weekly meditation session led by a prominent meditation teacher from the New York area, with each session focusing on a specific work of art. This podcast is recorded in front of a live audience, and includes an opening talk, a 20-minute sitting session, and a closing discussion. The guided meditation begins at 17:30.

Theme: hopes & anxieties

There’s a buddhist saying that “life is like a flash of lightning in a summer cloud.” In this episode of our Mindfulness Meditation podcast, Sharon Salzberg discusses how clinging to permanence develops anxiety and suffering.

This Week’s Work of Art

Above is a card selected from A Monument to the Anxious and Hopeful, currently on display in the Rubin Museum’s spiral lobby. Created by artist Candy Chang and writer James A. Reeves, the wall asks visitors to write down the reasons why they are hopeful and why they are anxious. Once they have written down their hopes and anxieties on seperate cards, they place them on either the hopeful side (blue) or the anxious side (red). This participation makes the Monument a constantly shifting, growing, and changing installation as it reflects our visitors greatest hopes and biggest anxieties.
