Family Sundays Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the format of Family Sundays?

Family Sundays Programs are held every Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. Arrive to the program when you like. Each month we explore a new theme. The art-making activity will be centered on that special theme. Your Museum Educator will guide your art-making with techniques and a brief demonstration of the project and will then let you explore a variety of art materials for making the project on your own. Materials will be provided, but please bring your creativity!

What are the goals of Family Sundays?

Our main goal is for you and your family to have a fun experience together while enhancing your family’s visit to the Rubin Museum of Art. Family Sundays will provide a new approach to museum-visiting and learning by conducting art-marking activities based on our exhibitions.

What does “Drop-in” mean? / What is a “Drop-in” Program?

“Drop-in” means you can partake in our program at the time that is most convenient for you and your family. Stop by our Education Center Art Studio any time between 1pm and 4pm on Sundays to join in the fun. No advance ticketing or reservations are required.

How do Family Sundays differ from Family Art Labs?

Family Art Labs are full two-hour workshop experiences that include an overview of the workshop theme, a guided group gallery exploration, and art-marking in the studio. Family Art Labs have limited tickets available. Family Sundays are art-making at your leisure and offer optional Family Exhibition Tours and thematic gallery searches. Family Sundays do not have limited tickets.

Is the 2 p.m. Family Exhibition Tour required?

While we encourage you to take advantage of our tours for an enhanced museum experience, the 2pm Family Exhibition Tour is optional. In addition to the tour, we also offer a thematic gallery search that you can enjoy on your own time in the galleries.

What is the length of time for the art activity and Family Exhibition Tour?

Family Sundays are scheduled from 1pm to 4pm, but the art activity may last as long as it takes for your child to create his/her work. If you choose to attend the Family Exhibition Tour, it will last approximately 30 min (from 2pm-2:30pm).

How do the activities differ each week/month?

Each month will present a new theme that connects to a current exhibition. Themes and art activities from week-to-week and throughout each month will remain the same.

Is it required that both child and adult participate in all Family Sunday activities?

We strongly believe that children learn best with the presence and support of a significant adult. Your enthusiasm and participation will encourage your child to be fully engaged in his/her museum experiences.

Is there an age limit for Family Sundays?

While our suggested age for the art activities is 3 and older, there is no age limit for Family Sundays.

Do I need to bring any materials with me to Family Sundays?

All materials will be provided for you! You are more than welcomed to bring a drawing pad and pencil to sketch in the galleries on your own, or ask about a Yak Pack from the Museum admissions desk. Please remember that ONLY pencils are allowed in the galleries (NO crayons, pens, or markers).

How can I prepare my child/children for our visit to the Rubin Museum of Art?

Before your visit:

  • Talk about the museum rules with your child (NO running. NO food or drink. NO touching the artworks).
  • Discuss with your child what they might do/see.
  • Find out what exhibitions will be open during your visit.

Family Sundays are made possible through the generosity of New York Life. Additional support has been provided by Agnes Gund, The Prospect Hill Foundation, Con Edison, Tiger Baron Foundation, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
