Back-to-school season can be a drag for many students, but a few trips to the Rubin can help kids jump back into the school year and ignite their creativity. It’s as easy as 1-2-3.
1) Think Outside the Classroom
Are you a parent, teacher, or student? Set up a field trip to the Rubin Museum and take a tour of the Himalayas without leaving New York. Our K-12 tours are free for all NYCDOE schools and include new themes like mindfulness and nature meets culture. You can also pair your tour with a one-hour art-making workshop that supports your theme. Explore all field trip options.
2) Listen Up
Coming soon: a new audio guide for children offers our younger visitors (age 5-12) and their families a fun and accessible way to explore the exhibition Gateway to Himalayan Art. Download this new offering via the free Rubin app, available on iTunes or Google Play.
3) Join us on a Family Sunday
Every Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. you can drop in to the Education Center for a family art-making activity, go on a gallery scavenger hunt, or take a family tour of the Museum at 2:00 p.m., all for free! (Ages 3 and older with accompanying adults)
September Sundays: Bind a Book
The traditions of Buddhism and many other religions come from important texts written many years ago. Walk through the galleries and look for examples of Buddhist books, and then stop by the art studio to create your own version.
October Sundays: Celebrate Diwali
Diwali is the Hindu Festival of Lights and Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu deity, is worshiped on this holiday. Listen to Diwali stories, explore the galleries on a Ganesha scavenger hunt, and drop by the art studio for Diwali-themed art making.
November Sundays: Build a City
Throughout the Rubin Museum’s collection you can find beautiful examples of landscape and architecture. Visit our new exhibition to discover the style of Tibetan buildings, and then stop by the art studio to make your own architectural creation.
