Friends of the Rubin are invited to join Donald S. Lopez, Jr., acclaimed author and Buddhist scholar, for a virtual talk on his new book Buddhism: A Journey Through History. This captivating session will focus on the mystery of the tulku. From the Potala Palace to the local temple, the tulku or “incarnate lama” has been central to Tibetan Buddhism for centuries. Lopez will discuss the origins and functions of the tulku institution, going on to describe how European missionaries and colonial officials described their remarkable encounters with tulkus in Lhasa and Shigatse.

The virtual event is complimentary to Friends of the Rubin. It includes a 30–40-minute presentation, followed by a Q&A session where attendees can engage directly with the speaker.
