Illustration of the Year of the Snake

Join us for an afternoon of learning and discovery as we honor Losar, the Tibetan New Year. This free community event is hosted by the Rubin in partnership with LaGuardia Community College’s Center for Immigrant Education and Training.

Learn about the significance of this holiday through storytelling and meditation with the Rubin’s Himalayan Programs & Communities Ambassador, Tashi Chödrön; sample scrumptious khapse pastries made especially for the new year; uncover the characteristics of this year’s zodiac animal, the wood snake, through artmaking; watch a traditional torma butter sculpture demonstration; and much more.

In light of the devastating earthquake that struck the foothills of the Himalayas on January 7, Losar will be observed differently this year. Its epicenter was located in Tingri county, a region close to Shigatse, one of Tibet’s holiest of cities. We mark this annual transition while remaining mindful of those impacted both in the region and abroad.
