Sherab Chamma, “Loving Mother of Wisdom”; Tibet; 19th century; Pigments on cloth; Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art; C2005.4.7
Sherab Chamma, the “Loving Mother of Wisdom,” is the principal female deity of the Bon religion. Her primary role is that of a compassionate mother figure who embodies the nature of wisdom. The four principal deities in the Bon religion are known as the Four Transcendent Ones, and Sherab Chamma is the only female and stands as the first among them. In this painting she appears peaceful with a yellow complexion. Her right hand holds a vase containing the essence of potential hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. Her left hand holds a mirror representing the purity of her heart as reflected in a perfect understanding of the karma and suffering of all beings.
