Machik Labdron (1055–1153) was one of the most prominent female masters and lineage holders in Tibetan Buddhism, and is renowned for being the first to widely propagate a practice known as chod, or severance. Her main teacher, the Indian master Phadampa Sanggye, schooled her in this practice, which involves visualizing cutting away the human body, and ultimately the ego, as a means of reaching enlightenment.
Cutting through attachment is essential to moving through life with fluidity. Chod practitioners intentionally visualize in their mind’s eye their own bodies as offerings.
