The Goddess of the Dawn is depicted in many different forms. Sometimes she rides a white horse through the sky, banishing the darkness and driving back the night with the orb of the sun in her outstretched right hand. More commonly she is yellow in color, with three faces and six arms, seated on a chariot drawn by seven pigs, removing all obstacles to happiness and well-being. The metaphors for meditation and spiritual practice are symbolized by light overcoming darkness.

The Goddess of the Dawn is a reminder that the world keeps moving, the dawn will come, and there will be light to drive out darkness. As we work on mindfulness and meditation, our practice can give us hope, or faith, that we can overcome the darkness in our lives and worlds.

Kimberly Brown is a meditation teacher and author. She leads classes and retreats that emphasize the power of compassion and kindness meditation to reconnect us to ourselves and others. Her teachings provide an approachable pathway to personal and collective well-being through effective and modern techniques based on traditional practices. She studies in both the Tibetan and Insight schools of Buddhism and is a certified mindfulness instructor. Her book Navigating Grief and Loss: 25 Buddhist Practices to Keep Your Heart Open to Yourself and Others was published in 2022, and an updated edition of Steady, Calm, and Brave was released in 2023.
