Yama Dharmaraja with Consort Yami; Tibet; 18th century; Pigment on cloth; Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art, Gift of Shelley and Donald Rubin; C2006.66.409
Yama Dharmaraja stands fiercely on top of his vehicle, a black bull, holding a skull cup and bone staff. His consort clings to his left side, wearing an animal skin draped across her back. Though Yama Dharmaraja appears to have the same form as Yama, the god of death, his name Dharmaraja means “king of law.” As a powerful protector deity, he takes the form of Yama so that he, like the Buddha’s teachings, liberate beings from suffering.
