This week’s meditation session is led by Tracy Cochran and the theme is Story.
Orgyen Dorje Chang, One of the Eight Manifestations of Padmasambhava; Tibet or Bhutan; 19th century; Silk applique; Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art; C2003.34.2
This large textile depicts Padmsambhava in the form of Orgyen Dorje Chang or Toskyi Dorje. This large appliqué would have been publicly shown during dance performances, which served as religious rituals and community gatherings that dramatized stories from Padmasambhava’s life. The size of this appliqué allowed the public to interact with the image, bringing the stories in the performances to life.
