Virtual Gateway to Himalayan Art and Cultures

This online intensive summer institute introduces higher education faculty to Himalayan art and cultural traditions that connect with East, South, and Inner Asian cultures and humanities fields of study.

The programs bring together faculty, including PhD candidates developing their curricula, with interdisciplinary specialists for a workshop-style training over six days from June 16 to July 2, 2025.

Rubin Museum staff and invited lead scholars will present and facilitate study-discussions focused on specific themes using cross-disciplinary approaches and employing the Project Himalayan Art digital platform and assigned materials. Guided smaller group sessions will be followed by collaborative drafting of sample syllabi and/or student engagement units. Rubin Museum staff and guest contributors and participants will also tackle topics of cultural sensitivity with respect to sacred images and cultural appropriation in the present day.

The institute will be fully virtual to maximize the advantages of the Project Himalayan Art digital platform and to offer more inclusive participation.

The application period ended on March 5, 2025 by 11:59 PM (Pacific Time). Applicants will be notified of their status on April 2, 2025. Those who have been accepted will have until April 16, 2025 to accept or decline the offer.
