Mount Mehru; Himalayan Region; 19th century; Wood with pigments; Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art; C2006.43.3
Mount Meru, depicted in this small Tibetan Buddhist model, is the center of the universe in the Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist cosmologies. Though the symbolism of Meru varies from tradition to tradition, it is always a mountain of mythical proportions that connects the heavenly and earthly realms, serving also as the anchor around which all heavenly bodies orbit and as the focus of the world.
